Tar Heel Bill?

There has been a lot of buzz concerning Bill Belichick’s future as a head coach in the NFL. Recently, reports believed that Belichick is not eyeing an NFL return, but a head coaching job at University of North Carolina. He did put forth a stipulation if he were to accept that job; his son Stephen would automatically be in line for the next head coach following Bill’s leave.

This is more than a challenging requirement.

I don’t believe Bill Belichick will be taking this job for a couple reasons. The first reason being that Belichick has something left to do that Tom Brady has already done, which is win a Super Bowl without the other present. Brady not only went to a historically mediocre Tampa Bay team, but he helped bring a Super Bowl home to a team that hadn’t won a Super Bowl since 2002. Let alone make the playoffs since 2007. Brady left New England and made an immediate impact without Belichick, in a move many people believed to be lateral. But he showed why he’s the greatest quarterback of all time. The question now remains, is Bill Belichick the greatest head coach of all time, or was he only successful with Tom Brady by his side? To quell those rumors, he’s going to need a Super Bowl without Brady. The next reason being Don Shula’s coaching record. While this may not be as big of a contributing factor, it’s certainly one that holds weight. Belichick is 14 wins away from tying Don Shula’s record as the most winningest coach in NFL history. If he were to complete this, as well as the many accolades and Super Bowl wins bestowed to him, he will undoubtedly go down as the greatest head coach of all time. When it comes time to make a decision, will have a lot to grapple with as he decides his coaching future, but unless they give his son the job after him, there is no chance he will take this job with the Tar Heels.
