New Team for America?

In a response to an actually accurate CNN article, CNN correspondent Don Riddell believes it’s time to abandon the Dallas Cowboys as, “America’s Team.” It’s actually kind of funny reporting if you look at it, but he does have a point. The Cowboys have had this nickname for decades, as they’ve always been known to have a high caliber team, with iconic players and a generally massive fanbase. They won some Super Bowls with Troy Aikman, Michael Irving, and a Emmitt Smith, which really underlined them as America’s team. But the Cowboys have won only four times in the playoffs, since 2000. The last time they made it to a Super Bowl was 1995. That will be 30 years starting next year, and the way their team looks, they’re not going to make it back before the 30th year will end.
I can hear Cowboys fans now. “No one can replace us. We are America’s team! This is our year!” Well, none of those things have been true since Troy Aikman suited up for the Cowboys. There are better teams, ones with bigger fanbases and more recent success than they have. The front-runner being the Kansas City Chiefs, which seems like an obvious choice if you’re going to endow a new team with that title. I’d say they earned it, but I don’t know if this is one of those titles that is easily transferrable. Sure, the Chiefs could be considered America’s team, but I don’t think they are really looking for the title. Is it time for the Cowboys to give up the nickname, “America’s team?” Yeah, I think so. Should they give it to the Chiefs? I don’t think so. Let them be their own team. If you give them that name, they may lose for 30 years straight.
